On 1st April 2022, the UK government will introduce its new Plastic Packaging Tax, also referred to as PPT. Once in place, this tax will be applied at the rate of £200 per tonne on any plastic packaging components that contain less than 30% recycled content.
The Plastic Packaging Tax will affect businesses that manufacture and/or import over 10 tonnes of plastic packaging within a 12-month period. Once you exceed the 10-tonne limit, your business will have 30 days to register with HMRC. Tax returns must be submitted every quarter, clearly showing records of plastic usage.
Whilst PPT will apply to most types of businesses, there are some exemptions: medical packaging, transport packaging, aircraft packaging, and components with uses other than packaging.
